Sheboygan Evangelical Free Church
What does the name, "Sheboygan Evangelical Free Church" really mean?
We are located, of course, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Sheboygan is the city we are called to, the city we are called from and the city we love!
The word "Evangelical" simply means that we teach (or "herald," "preach") the good news straight from the Bible. We announce Christ Jesus as the only name under heaven through which everyone must be saved. (Acts 4:12)
The founders of the Evangelical Free Churches of America came to America in the late 1800s to escape the pressure being placed on them by European State churches. The word "Free" means that we are free from government mandates about doctrines and church life. Additionally, each and every "Free Church" is autonomous, meaning that each individual congregation is free to make decisions about property and church policies, in keeping with the agreed upon Statement of Faith.
The building is not the "church." The people are the church. We are a group of redeemed people who love God and love others, sent out into Sheboygan and the world to
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20, ESV)
