1 Samuel 16:1-13: The Bethlehem Story, Part 3

December 11, 2022 | Dr. Gary Hylander
Passage: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

God uses surprising settings to achieve his purposes. God chooses overlooked people to accomplish his goals. God looks upon the inner nature of the heart rather than the outward appearance of humankind to set in motion his plan of action. Last week we discovered that a Moabite woman named Ruth was chosen by God to be part of the genealogical line leading to Jesus Christ. This was surprising grace at work!

In today’s passage, we will note that God has chosen a shepherd boy overlooked by family members to become the great king of Israel who would pave the way for the Messiah. It was David who would eventually be informed by God that your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16). Let’s ponder the story of David in Bethlehem, and understand how it relates to God’s strategic plan for humanity.

• The Strategic Process That God Might Use. (6-10)
• The Overlooked Person That God Might Choose. (11-13)
