Passage: Micah 5:2-9
As we have noted, the town of Bethlehem is a setting of great historical significance for God's people. It was the locale of Rachel’s death, the love story of Boaz and Ruth, and the birthplace of King David. After David’s death, no major events are recorded for a significant period of time pertaining to Bethlehem. However, in the 8th Century B.C., the prophet Micah somewhat dramatically proclaimed that the ultimate King of Israel was to be born in that very setting.
When wise men from the east came in search of the one born king of the Jews, King Herod quickly assembled all the chief priests and scribes, asking them as to where the Christ was to be born (Matthew 2:1-12). Their response was to reference Micah 5:2, which promised that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. As we examine Micah 5:2-9, let’s ponder how this small setting was chosen by God to be the launching pad for bringing the promised Messiah into the world.
