Psalm 122: Jerusalem's Peace

April 30, 2023 | Dr. Gary Hylander
Passage: Psalms 122:1-9

In matters pertaining to international peace, the status of Jerusalem is at the forefront of all such discussions. Ground zero in any Israeli-Palestinian peace talks is a hill in Jerusalem known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary. Israel annexed West Jerusalem after gaining control during the 1948 war of independence, while East Jerusalem, which includes the Dome of the Rock, came under Jordanian control. In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured East Jerusalem along with the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights.

Psalm 122 focuses upon Jerusalem (vv 2,3,6) and the house of the LORD (vv 1 and 9). As part of the Songs of Ascent, Psalm 122 depicts God’s people singing praise to the LORD as they enter the gates of Jerusalem. The theme of peace (Shalom) dominates these verses. As we examine Psalm 122, ponder the past, present, and future aspects of how this psalm relates to all people for all times.

As We Ponder Jerusalem’s Place, In God’s Plan, Note...

  • The Invitation To Worship Being Given. (1-2)
  • The Thankfulness To God Being Expressed. (3-5)
  • The Prayer For Peace Being Prioritized. (6-9)
