Psalm 45: The Wedding Planner

person Dr. Gary Hylander

Psalms 45-48 are a collection of kingship psalms in Book Two, similar to thegrouping of the five kingship psalms (Psalms 20-24) in Book One. Thedifference between these two collections involves the name for our sovereign ruler. In Psalms 20-24, the primary name used is LORD (Yahweh),while in Psalms 45-48 the name being emphasized is God (Elohim). This is because Book One emphasizes the national aspects of the kingdom, while Book Two lays stress upon the universal reign of God.

Psalm 45 is a royal wedding song. 2 Samuel 7:12-13, and 16 serve as the background to what is taught. David’s kingdom was to be Yahweh’skingdom, and the climax to David’s line is the Messiah (Jesus Christ), of whom it can be stated prophetically in 45:6 and 7 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever . . . Therefore God, your God, has anointed you. Let’s examinethis messianic psalm together, and reflect upon God’s sovereign plan for the Messiah, whom we know as Jesus Christ.

As We Consider The Messianic Wedding Imagery, Note That. . .- The Bridegroom Represents God’s Messiah. (1-9)

– The Bride Represents God’s People. (10-17)
