Psalm 62: For God Alone
Psalm 62 is a part of the second collection of Davidic psalms (Psalms 51-71). Seven different enemies of God’s messianic plan have just beennoted in Psalms 54-60. Note, the heart-felt cry of the messianic king isdirected to God (Elohim) in Psalm 61-64. Psalm 62 is part of this heart-feltcry for deliverance. As is typical in Book 2 of the Psalms, our sovereignruler is referred to as God (Elohim) more so than LORD (Yahweh). Thus, the purpose is to communicate the nature and plan of our Sovereign Godto the nations.Adversity seems to be David’s constant companion in Psalm 62. Ratherthan relying upon his skills, cunning, and military prowess, David statesclearly that his hope is placed in God alone (note especially Verses 1, 2, 5 and 6). The word alone can also be translated ‘truly’ or ‘only.’ In the midst of adversity, David places his trust in the exclusive God (Elohim), who issufficient to meet both David’s and our needs.
