Psalm 99: The Lord Reigns
Psalm 99 is part of the royal pyramid of psalms which emphasize the truth that The LORD reigns (Pss 93:1; 96:10; 97:1; 99:1). We are told that The LORD is exalted over all peoples, which means that this is a global monarchy, and that The LORD reigns over all. The historical background to these nine royal psalms is 1 Chronicles 16:31, which recounts the significant moment when David brought the ark of God to Zion, a visual statement of The LORD’s kingship.
The ark of God was a reminder that The LORD is the holy king. In Psalm 99, three significant statements are made about the holiness of The LORD. God’s holiness means that he is separated from sin. The tabernacle was distinguished by a veil, to separate the Israelites from The Most Holy (Exodus 26:33). As his people, the LORD called upon the Israelites to be a holy nation (Exodus 19:6). As we worship our LORD, let’s express our praise to him for being The Holy One who reigns as king over all.
