Series: The Seven Signs

John 4:46-54: That Was The Hour

September 24, 2023 | Pastor Jon MacDonald
Passage: John 4:46-54

From the beginning, God promised that he would send one Servant who would destroy the evil one (Gen 3:15) and bless ‘all the families of the earth.’ (Gen 12:3) This Son would be his servant, revealed as a great light who brings great joy. The government is ‘on his shoulder’ and he is called both the Son of God and the “Everlasting Father.” (Isaiah 9:6-7) All of the promises and hopes of sinners being restored to God forever rest in this Servant, this Son, this ‘Messiah’ to come.

In his gospel, John is fixated on proving that Jesus is that “Christ” (‘anointed’ or ‘Messiah’). If we are following this one-and-only Son of God today, we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by trusting him alone, we have life in his name. (John 20:31)

Series Information

The Seven Signs is a short series in the book of John. The term signs is the English translation of the Greek word semeion (σημεῖον), which is the word John used for miracle. The reason why the Apostle John placed emphasis upon signs is addressed in 20:30-31, which states...

“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
