Psalm 77: The Hearing

person Dr. Gary Hylander

As Asaph considers the threat faced by Israel due to foreigninvaders, he composes seven psalms that seek deliverance by Godin the midst of such threatening conditions. Psalm 77 is the first ofthese seven psalms. Notice how he begins this psalm with a cryfor help. Observe how he begins with the words I cry aloud to God,aloud to God, and he will hear me (77:1). Ponder in particular thereflective state of Asaph’s mind during the nighttime hours as heagonizes over the injustices faced by his people (77:1-6).

Asaph has questions for God when life seems unfair (77:7-9).Overwhelmed with emotion, what Asaph needs is a renewal of hismind, a fresh realization of God’s greatness and goodness. Thiscomes in Verses 10-15, in which he considers God’s gracious workin prior days. These verses serve as Asaph’s turning point. In thedifficult seasons of life, we need such a fresh renewal of spirit. AsAsaph recalls how God redeemed the Israelites from enslavementin Egypt, he comes to the conclusion that God can shepherd hispeople through the difficult times Asaph was currently facing(77:20). The same is true for us today.

When Seeking A Hearing With God In Extreme Times, Note…- How Our Questions Need To Be Addressed. (1-9)
– How Our Redemption Needs To Be Recalled. (10-15)
– How Our Perspective Needs To Be Renewed. (16-20)
