On this Easter Sunday, we are pausing to examine one of the most vivid, memorable resurrection appearances recorded in the gospels. We areentitling this account The Emmaus Encounter, a story which is unique to Luke. Here we find two followers of Jesus Christ involved in an intense discussionregarding the empty tomb, and the meaning attached to this historical reality. While making their way to Emmaus, Jesus appears, and joins in thediscussion.

Certain major themes appear in these verses. Consider the tension betweenfeelings of hopelessness and a sense of hopefulness. Note how Jesus usesthe Old Testament Scriptures as a means of pointing these disciples to him.Ponder the question posed by Jesus: Was is not necessary that the Christshould suffer these things and enter into his glory? (24:26). Heading home after atraumatic weekend, these disciples find themselves encountering the RisenSavior. Today, as you ponder your life journey, ask yourself how theResurrected Savior, Jesus Christ, has impacted your life.
