Matthew 27:32-51: And Yielded Up His Spirit
The Via Dolorosa, known as The Way of Suffering, is the path in the OldCity of Jerusalem which takes us on the route that Jesus would havewalked on his journey to the cross. As Matthew guides us along thispathway, ponder the ridicule Christ faced, and the ironies theyproduced. He was mocked for claiming to be a king, yet he was theKing. He was taunted to save himself, yet he died to save us. Thesixth to ninth hours cloaked in darkness the One who is the light ofthe world.
The setting known as Golgotha means Place of a Skull. This was a hillto the north of Jerusalem. It was here that Christ was crucified.Christ’s death was an act of substitution, in which the Sinless Onedied for the sinful ones. His work on the cross was sufficient, bywhich no human efforts are to be added to what Christ accomplishedon our behalf. As we prepare our hearts for partaking of thecommunion elements, reflect upon the reality that what we have notdone and could not do, the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us.
