Psalm 98: Sing to the King

person Pastor Jon MacDonald

We have said that the theme of the fourth book of the Psalms (90-106)is ‘maturation’ (OP Robertson). Within this book, we have beenstudying a ‘chapter’ consisting of nine consecutive psalms (92-100)which emphasize that ‘the LORD is King.’ Placed in the context of thepsalter, this ‘chapter’ emphasizes that one of the things that growingbelievers must do is sing confidently that ‘The LORD is King.’

There are 7 imperatives (commands, requirements) in Psalm 98: sing (1),shout out praises (4, 6), be happy (4), sing for joy (4), and sing praises (4,5). Two of these 5 commands are repeated twice. God’s people arecommanded to sing to the King, and God will use these songs to blessthe whole world.

1. God’s (maturing) people will sing new songs. (1-3)- Why ‘new’?- What is meant by ‘sing’? (What if I don’t sing?)- The subject of ‘new songs.’
2. Faithful singing invites the whole world to sing to the King. (4-6)- Faithful singing requires faithful instrumentalists.- Faithful singing invites the whole world into the King’s presence.
3. The global future of all songs. (7-9)- Creation joins in.- The King reigns in righteousness. Forever.
