Psalm 104: Song of the Creator, Part 1
As we consider the origins of this universe, we need to embrace this basic principle: whatever we take as our starting point will shape our view of this world. Notice that the psalmist chooses God as his starting point with the words Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! (104:1). In other words, the psalmist began with the Creator before considering the creation.
Psalm 104 generally follows the flow of God’s creative acts as described in Genesis 1. The days of creation seem to influence the psalmist’s train of thought. Notice that the psalmist did not follow all six days in great detail, nor did he write of the creation of humanity. Furthermore, he places great emphasis upon God’s providential care of his universe throughout the course of time. Throughout this magnificent psalm, one overarching dominant theme persists: the greatness of our LORD, our God! (104:1).
