Psalm 115: Exclusive Glory

We have noted that Book Five of the Psalms began with an introductory psalm (Psalm 107) followed by three Davidic psalms (Pss 108-110). We are now examining Psalm 111-117, which are arranged in a pyramidic form. These psalms are distinguished by the phrase Praise the LORD! Notice how Pss 111-112 begin with Praise the LORD, while Ps 113 ends with Praise the LORD. Interestingly, this repeated phrase is absent in Ps 114. The phrase Praise the LORD reappears in Pss 115-116 at the end of these psalms. The finale is found in Ps 117, the shortest psalm in the Bible, in which Praise the LORD both begins and ends this psalm.

For Jewish people living in exile, they would have heard the nations asking Where is their God? (Ps 115:2). The people of God would need to respond with the words Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases (Ps 115:3). As we examine these verses, let’s worship our incomparable God, and apply these verses to the times in which we live.

– The Sovereign Authority He Demonstrates. (16-18)
