Psalm 116: I Will Call On Him
Psalm 116 is positioned in the heart of the first set of hallelujah psalms (111-117). The second set of hallelujah psalms comes in 146-150. Both sets of hallelujah psalms occur in Book 5 of the psalms (107-150), the theme of which (according to O. P. Robertson) is the consummation of the LORD’s kingdom promises. The implication is that God’s people should be eager and active to praise him as we become more aware of his sovereign and unrivaled reign. Of course!
The special feature of Psalm 116 is its emphasis on prayer and trust. The unknown author writes about the lessons of a devastating and life-threatening season of earnest prayer and gives thanks to the LORD for saving him completely. Join in our study as we cry with the psalmist, Hallelujah!
1. The LORD uses great affliction to teach us to pray. (1-4)2. The LORD answers prayer. (5-11)3. The LORD receives praises (hallelujah) because of answered prayer. (12-19)
