Psalm 118: Steadfast Love
After the initial collection of Praise the LORD psalms (Psalms 111-117), we are now introduced to the coupling of a messianic psalm (Psalm 118) with a torah psalm (Psalm 119). This is the third time such a coupling appears in the psalms (see Psalms 1 and 2, 18 and 19). Psalm 118, which we are examining today, receives special recognition as the psalm quoted the most in the New Testament.
Psalm 118 draws our attention to both the sufferings and glories of the ultimate king, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The key messianic statement is found in verse 22, which states The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. New Testament passages referencing this truth include Matthew 21:42, Acts 4:11, and 1 Peter 2:7. Throughout Psalm 118 the phrase His steadfast love endures forever is a fresh reminder of God’s love for us, as revealed in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
