Psalm 123: Longings for Mercy

person Dr. Gary Hylander

Have you ever found yourself longing for mercy? Perhaps you are recalling a time when you faced a combination of misunderstandings and false accusations. This seems to be the situation described in Psalm 123, in which the pilgrims arrived in Jerusalem after a long, arduous journey. Evidently, they endured contempt along the way, for the psalmist writes we have had more than enough of contempt (verse 3). The journey of life is challenging when social contempt is combined with physical weariness.

If this is where you are at on your journey, what should be your starting point for addressing such issues? Notice the starting point of the psalmist: To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens (verse 1). He would later write so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us (verse 2). When enduring relational conflict along life’s journey, keep your eyes focused upon our Sovereign LORD. This is the dominant theme in Psalm 123.
