Psalm 124: If Not For the Lord
Psalm 124 is one of four psalms within the Songs of Ascents ascribed to David (see also Psalms 122, 131, and 133). The verses describe a heart of thankfulness for the protection God has provided on life’s journey. When David began his reign in Jerusalem, the Philistines sent out forces to defeat him in the Valley of Rephaim (2 Samuel 5:17-25). The LORD delivered David, and brought victory to the Israelite people.
This psalm of praise and thanksgiving would be on the lips of God’s people as they returned from years of captivity. Note the repeated phrase If it had not been the LORD who was on our side (verses 1 and 2). Though their journey was difficult, they had the assurance that God was with them. Reflecting upon life’s challenges, they could end with these words: Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. The sovereign LORD who created this world is with you through your life’s journey.
