Psalm 129: Answers For The Afflicted
As we make our way through the Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120-134), we find ourselves desiring to read and reread Psalm 129. In poetic form, the psalmist recounts the trials and afflictions endured by God’s people. Two images of affliction emerge in these verses. The first image is that of the plowman (1-4). The picture is one of suffering, in which Israel’s enemies are making long furrows on the backs of the Israeli people.
The second image is that of grass growing on the flat rooftops of Israeli houses. Such grass lacks sustainability, because there is no depth to the soil (5-8). Such will be the ultimate outcome for Israel’s persecutors. Though they would achieve some initial success, their success is short term, for God’s people will be the ones to thrive in the end. This is the authentic hope of all who have put faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
