Psalm 131: The Heart Of The Matter

person Dr. Gary Hylander

Psalm 131 is a song composed by David. It lays great stress upon the nature of humility by which we exalt God alone as sovereign. Note the opening expression, O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high, and compare it to the description of Satan in Ezekiel 28:17 which states Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.

There is a natural flow from Psalm 130 to Psalm 131. In Psalm 130, we noted the freedom experienced when sin is forgiven. The result of this, an act of God’s grace, is that we develop authentic self-awareness of who we are in relation to our sovereign God, which instills within us true humility. As we examine these verses, let’s ponder how we can apply this psalm to our lives on our journey through life.

As We Establish Humility Before Our Sovereign LORD, Note…

The Contentment We Need To Develop. (1)
The Responsibility We Need To Accept. (2)
The Hope We Need To Embrace. (3)
