Psalm 132: The House of Promise
Psalm 132 takes us back to the significant events pertaining to King David in 2 Samuel 6 and 7. In the sixth chapter, David takes the lead in bringing the ark of the LORD into Jerusalem. The ark signified the presence of the LORD among the Israelite people. In chapter seven, David admirably desires to construct the temple of God, a structure worthy of our Sovereign LORD. However, David is informed that he will not be the one to oversee such a project. God will oversee the construction in his own way according to his own time.
We can divide Psalm 132 into two parts. Verses 1-10 pertain to matters of the temple, while verses 11-18 relate to the Davidic sons who will serve as kings, paving the way for the ultimate son, Jesus Christ. Like David, there are times when we make great requests of God. Sometimes God says no, sometimes God says wait, and sometimes God says yes. Through it all, it is to be God, and God alone who is to receive the glory.
