Psalm 144: Battle Preparations
Psalm 144 is part of the fourth and final collection of Davidic psalms (Psalms 138-145). We can sense David’s military background shaping the opening verses, as he led campaigns against the Philistines, as well as defending himself against the schemes of both Saul and Absalom. He calls upon us to remain focused upon the LORD as we face the endless battles of life.
Of particular interest to us is David’s reference to foreign invaders. In 144:7 David cries out to the LORD to rescue me and deliver me from the many waters, from the hand of foreigners. In similar fashion, David writes in 144:11 Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of foreigners. For Israelites returning from exile, the impact of foreign invaders would have been fresh on their minds. If you are needing to prepare for both expected and unexpected battles in life, this psalm is for you.
