Psalm 148: As The Creation Sings

We are in the midst of examining the Hosanna Psalms (Psalms 146-150), each of which begins and ends with the words Praise the LORD. As we have noted, Hallelujah is the blending of two Hebrew words: Hallel (praise ye) and Jah (a contraction of Yahweh). In Psalm 148, the summons to praise the LORD is directed to our LORD as being sovereign over the universe, the creator and sustainer of the cosmos.

The word praise occurs 13 times in these 14 verses. Furthermore, the term all occurs 9 times, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of praise. Clearly, the creation is designed to praise the creator. As we examine Psalm 148, note how verses 1-6 correlate with the first 2 days described in Genesis 1, while verses 7-12 are generally connected with days 3-6. Notice also how verse 14 represents the teaching of Moses given in Deuteronomy 10:21-22. As we consider how the entirety of this world is designed with the purpose of offering praise to our creator, let’s use Psalm 148 as our guide in offering comprehensive praise to our LORD.
