Psalm 39: Measuring Our Days

person Pastor Jon MacDonald

Today (Psalm 39), we close our study of Book 1 (1-41) of the Psalms. Psalms 38-41 are the ‘final chapter’ in this book which are all penned by David (39 of the 41 ‘Book 1’ Psalms are attributed to David). 38-40 are personal laments which delve into how suffering and affliction justly comes upon the guilty sinner, and Psalm 41 celebrates with thanksgiving God’s faithfulness to forgive and reconcile the repentant sinner.

God disciplines and teaches his daughters and sons. He teaches us that he is good, and he teaches us that life is very precious and very short. When afflictions wrestle us into solitary corners and we have no words, he teaches us to wait upon him for an answer (38:15, 39:7 and 40:1-2), and he answers us.

WHEN AFFLICTIONS ISOLATE US BEFORE THE LORD . . .
1. It is wise to remain silent. (1-3, 9)
2. Let him teach us to pray. (4-8, 10-13)
– Turn to the LORD for instruction (4-6); ‘My days are so short.’
– Turn to the LORD for deliverance (7-8); ‘He is my only rescue plan.’
– Turn to the LORD for mercy (10-11); ‘He alone is dear to me.’
– Turn to the LORD with confidence (12-13); ‘He has never failed me.’
