2 Timothy 1:1-2: According To The Promise
The time had come for the passing of the torch. Throughout his far-reaching ministry, the Apostle Paul had kept younger men by his side, with the result being that new leaders would continue to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ through subsequent generations. Just as Moses passed the torch to Joshua and Elijah passed the torch to Elisha, so too did the Apostle Paul pass the torch onward to Timothy.
2 Timothy, the last of Paul’s writings, was penned during a time when persecution against Christians throughout the Roman empire was accelerating. As a young pastor in Ephesus (part of modern-day Turkey), Timothy would deeply value the wisdom offered by Paul, his esteemed mentor. It is traditionally held that Paul was martyred during the reign of Emperor Nero. It is most likely that the three Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) were written during the 62-67 time period. Today, we’ll begin exploring 2 Timothy together and see how these chapters relate to our lives.
