John 4:46-54: That Was The Hour
From the beginning, God promised that he would send one Servant who would destroy the evil one (Gen 3:15) and bless ‘all the families of the earth.’ (Gen 12:3) This Son would be his servant, revealed as a great light who brings great joy. The government is ‘on his shoulder’ and he is called both the Son of God and the Everlasting Father. (Isaiah 9:6-7) All of the promises and hopes of sinners being restored to God forever rest in this Servant, this Son, this ‘Messiah’ to come.
In his gospel, John is fixated on proving that Jesus is that Christ (‘anointed’ or ‘Messiah’). If we are following this one-and-only Son of God today, we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by trusting him alone, we have life in his name. (John 20:31)
