John 6:16-21: Out For a Walk
There are three accounts of Jesus walking on water in the Gospels. Matthew (14:22-33), Mark (6:45-52) and John (6:16- 21). What they share in common is their placement; just after the feeding of the 5,000, and their focus: a glorious revelation intended only for the 12 disciples.
It’s not always the healings or miraculous provisions which finally prove Jesus to us. Sometimes, it’s the realization of his great love for us, and the way he shows up for us in our greatest hour of need. As Jesus walks on water, he reveals complete sovereignty over all creation and a perfect, steadfast love, which he always uses to save those who trust him.
He sends his disciples into treacherous conditions. (16-18)
He overcomes impossible obstacles to get to us. (19)
His personal presence calms every threat. (20-21)
