Passage: 2 Chronicles 20:1-12

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a time set aside to honor those who have laid down their lives in service to our country. From early days, the graves of these soldiers are decorated with flowers, wreaths, and flags. At Arlington National Cemetery, Memorial Day is commemorated each year with a ceremony during which an American Flag is placed upon each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

On the Sunday preceding Memorial Day, we typically consider a passage of Scripture describing a battle scene. Today’s exposition covers 2 Chronicles 20:1-12, which describes the Jewish people being confronted by an army of vast proportions. King Jehoshaphat wisely takes the matter to God in prayer, seeking the LORD’s intervention. The king concludes his prayer with the words We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you (20:12). Let’s reflect upon these verses, and note how they relate to modern life.

In Threatening Situations, Stay Focused Upon The LORD...

  • Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty Over The Situation. (1-6)
  • Applying God’s Promises To The Situation. (7-11)
  • Seeing God’s Intervention In The Situation. (12)
