Psalm 72: To the Ends of the Earth

Passage: Psalms 72:1-17

With Psalm 72, we come to the end of Book Two. As we have noted, a
primary distinction between Books One and Two involves the names of
our sovereign ruler of the universe. While Book One emphasizes the name
LORD (Yahweh), Book Two places primary emphasis upon the term God
(Elohim). LORD (Yahweh) is the covenantal, personal name for our
sovereign ruler, a name embraced by the LORD’s followers. God (Elohim) is
the term used for a broader audience, understood by both Jew and Gentile.

Psalm 72, written by Solomon, has both now and not yet aspects to it.
When we ponder the nature of the kingdom being described, we quickly
note that the extent of the kingdom was not realized under Solomon’s
reign. This psalm anticipates the future reign of Christ, the one described
as greater than Solomon (Matthew 12:42). So, Psalm 72 is a messianic
psalm, one that helps us to understand the Lord Jesus Christ’s reign in the
latter days.

As We Consider Christ’s Reign In The End Times, Note...

• The Distinctive Nature of Christ’s Reign. (1-7)

• The Extensive Scope of Christ’s Reign. (8-14)

• The Future Blessings of Christ’s Reign. (15-17)
