Passage: Genesis 3:22-24
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life. (Genesis 3:22–24)
CROSS REFERENCES
• 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. (Ephesians 2:1–3)
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What were some of the highlights and lowlights of your week? Everyone needs to get a chance to answer!
2. As a master liar and manipulator, the devil often uses half-truths to deceive us into sinning against God. Why do you think “half-truths” can be even more dangerous than outright lies?
3. At the heart of Adam and Eve’s choice to eat from the tree of knowledge was the decision to go their way, instead of God’s way, to do their will, not God’s. This choice to go our own way is what’s at the heart of all sin. What are some areas in your life where are you tempted to go your way instead of God’s?
4. Sin robbed Adam and Eve of everything. How has your sin or the sin of others (parents, siblings, friends, etc.) brought trouble and pain into your life? And what blessings have you missed out on because you chose the “tree of knowledge” instead of the “tree of life?
5. Are you spiritually dead or alive? How do you know? And how can one go from spiritually dead to being spiritually alive?
6. Close by talking with God about what He said to us tonight by answering these questions in prayer: In light of the truths revealed by God in this passage…
1) What can I praise God for?
2) What sin do I need to confess?
3) What can I thank God for?
4) What needs do I have that I need to ask God to satisfy?
