Psalm 34:1-10: A Testimony of Thankfulness

February 06, 2022 | Dr. Gary Hylander
Passage: Psalms 34:1-10

The psalm we are considering today is known as an acrostic psalm, the third of four that appear in Book One. Each verse begins with one of the 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. For example, verse 1 begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Aleph, while the last letter, Taw, is in verse 21. Verse 22 should be viewed as a postscript. Furthermore, Psalm 34 should be viewed as a psalm of individual thanksgiving. Psalms 34 and 37 bracket four psalms of the innocent sufferer.

The background to this psalm can be found in 1 Samuel 21:10-22:1, which describes a period of intense danger David experienced with the Philistines in Gath, the region in which Goliath once lived. In this psalm, David expresses his thankfulness to the LORD for delivering him in a time of distress.
