Psalms 127-128: Like Arrows

June 18, 2023 | Dr. Gary Hylander
Passage: Psalms 127:1-128:6

On this Father's Day, it is wise to pause and reflect upon Psalms 127 and 128. These two psalms serve as the midpoint of the 15 Songs of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). Having made their journey to Jerusalem, these pilgrims now reflect upon this Psalm of Solomon. Note the metaphors of home life in Psalm 127. Ponder the house the LORD builds, the city the LORD protects, and the arrows in the hand of the warrior. The psalmist is describing a heritage from the LORD (127:3).

In Psalm 128, metaphors continue to be used, such as a fruitful vine and olive shoots (128:3). Note how verses 1 and 4 begin and end with the dual emphasis upon being blessed and being people who fear the
LORD, which involves trusting in the LORD. Psalm 128 ends with a multi-generational emphasis, may you see your children’s children and peace be upon Israel. On this Father’s Day, let’s use these two psalms to honor our fathers, as is prescribed in Exodus 20:12.

As We Apply Wisdom To The Home, Note...

  • The Conditions Our LORD Sets. (127:1-2)
  • The Heritage Our LORD Establishes. (127:3-5)
  • The Blessing Our LORD Provides. (128:1-4)
  • The Future Our LORD Designs. (128:5-6)
