Psalm 62: For God Alone

June 12, 2022 | Dr. Gary Hylander
Passage: Psalms 62:1-12

Psalm 62 is a part of the second collection of Davidic psalms (Psalms 51-
71). Seven different enemies of God’s messianic plan have just been
noted in Psalms 54-60. Note, the heart-felt cry of the messianic king is
directed to God (Elohim) in Psalm 61-64. Psalm 62 is part of this heart-felt
cry for deliverance. As is typical in Book 2 of the Psalms, our sovereign
ruler is referred to as God (Elohim) more so than LORD (Yahweh). Thus,
the purpose is to communicate the nature and plan of our Sovereign God
to the nations.

Adversity seems to be David’s constant companion in Psalm 62. Rather
than relying upon his skills, cunning, and military prowess, David states
clearly that his hope is placed in God alone (note especially Verses 1, 2, 5
and 6). The word alone can also be translated “truly” or “only.” In the midst
of adversity, David places his trust in the exclusive God (Elohim), who is
sufficient to meet both David’s and our needs.

• The Hope That God Alone Has Instilled. (5-8)

• The Outcome That God Alone Has Assured. (9-12)
